Summary: Superb Research and Enthralling Style!
... Although one of the main topics covered in this book is dyslexia and how it may be a culturally defined disorder as well as a neurological disorder, the book covers a wide range of data. Dehaene is very thorough, offering extensive fMRI maps of up to date research on modules of the brain pertaining to reading. The book may be hard to wade through for those of us unfamiliar with extensive neurological terminology, but Dehaene works hard to ensure that his readers understand the issues. A very worthwhile read for any

Summary: Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
... An astonishing work, explaining convincingly how mankind acquired (only in the last 5,000 years) a skill we all take for granted: reading. The brief explanation, as I (a non-scientist) understand it? Reading takes quite a lot of brain computer firepower (because of the multiple processing required), such that our eventually huge frontal lobes were necessary. The portions of our brain used initially for visual recognition lead to the wiring of our brains to recognize certain key shapes, shapes that eventually become

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | A renowned cognitive neuroscientist's fascinating and highly informative account of how the brain acquires reading How can a few black marks on a white page evoke an entire universe of sounds and meanings? In this riveting investigation, Stanislas Dehaene provides an accessible account of the brain circuitry of reading and explores what he calls the "reading paradox": Our cortex is the product of millions of years of evolution in a world without writing, so how did it adapt to recognize

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-22 Summary: Awesome Workbook, USE FOR SCORE INCREASE ... So, a friend of mine recommended this workbook to me. He said that it helped him increase by 70 pts from a 670 to a 740. I bought it, did most of the sentence completions, studied the vocab., and did the passages. I went from a 670 on the critical reading (March sat 09') to a 750! (Dec sat 09'). I have to say that I am thoroughly impresseed with this book. It arranges the sentence completions in three sets according to difficulty and the passage based reading questions are harder than the real sat which definitely ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-03 Summary: This belongs on every writer's shelf ... Francine Prose's "Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Wrote Them" belongs on every writer's bookshelf. After reading it, you'll catch yourself reading in a new, more careful manner. [2] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-22 Summary: Get writing, but read this first ... Dear readers, The most valuable hints for writers pertain to careful word usage and sentence structure (the first few chapters of the book). I have read a few 'how to' books about creative writing and none have touched on the importance of a good paragraph. This is the best book yet on this area of writing. However, I did find the section on dialogue pretty tedious and skipped over much of this, as it seemed to reduce itself to an opinion of an author backed up by excerpts to prove the opinion. If I want this, I read ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-01-01 Summary: Writer's POV ... I read this for a creative writing course. After reading many "handbooks" on writing over the past few years, I can say that this was the first that went beyond nuts and bolts issues of technique to provide a perspective on the writer's point of view itself as subject matter. It made me conscious of my reading process, and has changed how I read. I can see now that I used to read mainly for plot. Events and actions made immediate sense to me. Now I read for the pleasures of character and style as well. Prose does an ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-12-28 Summary: Reads like prose ... Love for literature can easily become an affectation. If a stranger or an acquaintance comes up to you and says something like "good literature can be appreciated down to every single word..." you'll probably dismiss the person as a pedantic-snobbish-pompous moron. When Francine Prose does it (with a better choice of words, of course), she makes you believe her and pay attention to her. She writes with such sincerity and candidness that you drop your cynicism and enjoy the ride as she exalts writers you do or don't ...more

She reads the work of the very best writers—Dostoyevsky, Flaubert, Kafka, Austen, Dickens, Woolf, Chekhov—and discovers why their work has endured. She takes pleasure...more
