[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2006-05-15 Summary: is there a need for this 3rd edition? ... Johnson offers the student excerpts from a sampling of primary historical sources, covering the period till 1877. The stress here is on the student reading for herself contemporaneous accounts, that convey an immediacy that texts written much later often lack. There is a good sweep, from Spanish to British to American narratives, as a reminder of the complexity of the historical experiences. Having said this, I am uncertain as to the actual need for this 3rd edition, as contrasted to the 2 earlier editions. It's not ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-08-23 Summary: Seductive, riveting, quietly shattering ... With a book as hyped as this, it is difficult for it to meet one's expectations when you actually come to read it. But "Reading Lolita in Tehran" is indeed a magnificent book, a riveting memoir chronicling the ascent of the Islamic fundamentalist dictatorship in Iran and showing the power - and limitations - of literature to help people deal with - face? escape? bear? - the traumatic, many times tragic ramifications of living under an authoritarian regime, like the one brought on by the Iranian Revolution. A group ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-08-05 Summary: Those who've been there tell me another story ... As an English professor, I've taught this book in my classes several times. And over the years, I've had a large following of Persian students who have written on and walked and talked with me about Middle East issues. The intimate details are astounding and more than most Americans could ever get from just one book without having been there themselves. But to the book. What's interesting is that there is a difference of opinion between males and female Persians in my class, as there should be--for males are dominant ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-06-05 Summary: So much to learn from this book ... Ms. Nafisi had done a super job in depicting life in Iran before and during the Islamic revolution. Yes, lives changed for men and women. But women, in particular, have been greatly impacted. Let's hope we don't forego the great things in life, such as reading great literature, in the name or religion. Ms. Nafisi depicts the impact of the Islamic revolution in Iran on its women much like my own book The Ruby Tear Catcher. I enjoyed reading this book. Nahid Sewell, Author of The Ruby Tear Catcher ...more
Editorial Reviews [1] ... Product Description | Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Azar Nafisi, a bold and inspired teacher, secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. Some came from conservative and religious families, others were progressive and secular; some had spent time in jail. They were shy and uncomfortable at first, unaccustomed to being asked to speak their minds, but soon they removed their veils and began to speak more freely–their...more
[2] ... Review | An inspired blend of memoir and literary criticism, Reading Lolita in Tehran is a moving testament to the power of art and its ability to change and improve people's lives. In 1995, after resigning from her job as a professor at a university in Tehran due to repressive policies, Azar Nafisi invited seven of her best female students to attend a weekly study of great Western literature in her home. Since the books they read were officially banned by the government, the women were forced to meet in secret,...more
