Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-28
Summary: Excellent
... If you're serious about reading faster, this is the book to get. It is very effective if you do the drills and everything like it says. Of course, that's the down side too - you actually have to WORK...

Summary: Best speed reading book on the market
... This book is, hands down, the best speed reading book on the market. It reads as a home-study course, meant to be read one day at a time, for 36 lessons. There are also practice drills to be following the daily lessons where you practice what you learn. Yes, this might sound like a lot of effort, but the rewards are wonderful. Do you expect to just pick up a musical instrument without putting in practice time? Will you become a good athlete by sitting on the couch watching TV all day? Speed reading is the same. It's

Summary: Yes - This Works!
... I was amazed tha after reading only a few chapters, I was reading at double my former speed. The approaches presented in this book worked so well I finished one selected book in a matter of hours. Something I've never done before since I'm generally a very slow reader. However, one thing to keep in mind is that you have to be consistent and dedicated with practice readings over a period of of many weeks & months or you'll lose the "momentum" of what's being taught. Overall though, I'm quite pleased with my progress.

Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-10-05 Summary: A Walk (Through the Dictionary) Not Spoiled! ... Shea produces here a very entertaining and enlightening glance at both a dictionary that is so large that many homes don't have a shelf that can hold it all as well as a glimpse into the madness of someone crazy enough to want to read such a book. Sure, you'll learn a few new words and laugh at a lot of words that you didn't know existed, but at the same time you see the workings of a human being who's excited by an activity which many would consider the definition of "boring". The author injects the dictionary with ...more

[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-11-02 Summary: reading the oed ... This is a great book not only for those who love their dictionaries or own an OED, which seem to be the people who have reviewed this book so far. I neither love my dictionary** I own my mom's from high-school and i read it to fall asleep** nor do i own a single volume of the OED, the last time i even saw a copy of the OEd was the condensed version at my high-school library. What makes this a great fascinating and entertaining book to read is the words that Shea choose to highlight, his version of the definitions and ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-11-10 Summary: Porno For Bibliophiliacs ... If this book was in any way meant to be a subliminal commercial for the Oxford English Dictionary (All Hail Its August Name!) it worked, because after reading this I forked over megabucks for my own set: and during a recession, too, go figger. This story of one man's obsessive love of dictionaries and his veritable marriage to the OED brought back enjoyable memories of A.J. Jacobs' The Know It All, in which the similarly driven A.J. spent a year reading the Encyclopedia Britannica. The comparisons between Jacobs and ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | An obsessive word lover’s account of reading the Oxford English Dictionary cover to cover. “I’m reading the OED so you don’t have to. If you are interested in vocabulary that is both spectacularly useful and beautifully useless, read on...” So reports Ammon Shea, the tireless, word-obsessed, and more than slightly masochistic author of Reading the OED . The word lover’s Mount Everest, the OED has enthralled logophiles since its initial publication 80 years ago. Weighing in...more

[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-10-11 Summary: I don't believe it!! ... OK, I gave this book 5 stars, because I didn't read it, and did not want my critical comment to detract from what was perhaps an honest effort. But I own the OED, and I personally do not see how someone can simply go forward and read every definition, quote (many of which are written in Old English and almost impossible to decipher), and sense of simple words in ONE YEAR. That's about 60 pages a day. Now I LOVE my OED, and I have spent hours poring over its glorious and mysterious words and scholarly source quotes. ...more

[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-03-20 Summary: Loved it!! ... I love that this series, including "Bread and Wine:Readings for Lent and Easter," because it challeneges our complacent culture-dictated experience of Advent and Easter. This is not a feel-good book, it is a faith-building book. Be prepared to be shaken up and for God to meet you in a new way. I bought copies for my friends and family. Everyone loved it! Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-04-01 Summary: Great Test prep ... I have been using these tests to prepare for the state test. Most of the tests are a little easy for my high kids, however they work great for my on-grade level and at-risk kids. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2004-12-26 Summary: learn from the tests ... Good reading cannot be achieved overnight. Young kids need to learn and read extensively to build their skills. Taking practice tests is an effective way, because they are questioned and results are clearly measured. Without feedback, you don't know where you are or what you need. This book provides tests on phonics, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and even reading graphs. My child used it for assessment as well as for learning. Very good contents. The book is short though; my child finished it in 3 weeks. For further ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2006-03-04 Summary: effective test preparation ... In the past, I did not feel like children should use test workbooks this early. After we enrolled in Beestar weekly reading program (an excellent web site http://www.beestar.org), we realize that there are so many kids doing so well. No wonder the standard tests keep raising the bar. A low expectation from parents only leads to low achieving children. This book boosts your child's vocabulary, reading, and test taking skills effectively. It gives you a good chance to know how much your child learned in school. No matter ...more
