On the other hand, the author builds a rickety scaffolding in opposition to the teaching of phonics, claims the scaffolding to be the latest theory, but ends up seeming to me musty and quaint. Well, the year was 1997; and that was somewhat the crossroads in the reading wars, when so much casual confidence started to erode. As a requirement for The Summer Reading Clinc at Miami University, my colleagues and I were required to read "Beyond Tradtional Phonics" by Margaret Moustafa. This book was enlightening, one of the best I have read in a long itme.
