I like this series because it's basic and to the point. The pages emphasized both recognizing the letter and recognizing the sound. My children found the instructions easy to follow. Kindergarten is a good place to start, but I also highly recommend Grade 1. This book will be easy for children who are more willing to try writing. I am working with child #3 right now in this book, and have to help him trace the letters. ...more

We started when he was about 4 and he was actually reading novels at age 7. The only problem is that he was so far ahead of his first grade peers that his teachers got upset with me for "creating a problem in the class." Indeed. Anyway, I've bought these books for my kids and their kids and they have, in every case, brought positive results. Phonics is the only way to teach a kid how to read! The set has a great cd that we use in the car while running errands and the kids have both learned every letter sound and even memorized the example words. The method is so effective--sing songy and rythmic. The 3 year old is now so aware of letters--he asks how to spell words constantly.
