Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-07-08 Summary: A must read for any parent contemplating adopting from Russia! ... This book is a must read for any parent adopting from Russia. I adopted a 3.5 year old orphaned girl from Russia 2 years ago. I only wish I would have read this book before she came home. Living in the United States we are truly blessed to live in a country that values family life and children. It's hard to comprehend anything but putting children first. I truly think if I would have read Boy from Baby House 10 before she came home, the transition would have been a bit easier. Alan Philips describes, in detail, the ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-06-24 Summary: heartbreaking ... This book was so hard to read. It broke my heart. It made me cry. I had bad dreams about Baby Houses. However the happy ending and John's precious spirit, truly a gift from God, were the reasons I finished it. Getting to hear John's story blessed my life. We are adopting 2- 3 yr old boys from Bulgaria who would be moved to an institution at age 4 if we were not coming for them. They have Down Syndrome. To us they are worth rescueing. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-05-23 Summary: Inspiring story! ... This is a story of heartbreak, and triumph. John Lahutsky is an incredibly inspiring young man, whose story MUST be heard. This book raises awareness of the torment and horror that still exists for orphaned children in Russia, and the hope that is possible to save them. Contrary to what a previous review said, This boy IS special! His endurance and resolve to persist throughout impossible circumstances makes him an example of the true spirit of fortitude and survival that we can all learn from. It creates the motivation ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | In 1990, a young boy afflicted with cerebral palsy was born, prematurely, in Russia. His name was Vanya. His mother abandoned him to the state childcare system and he was sent to a bleak orphanage called Baby House 10. Once there, he entered a nightmare world he was not to leave for more than eight years. Housed in a ward with a group of other children, he was clothed in rags, ignored by most of the staff and given little, if any, medical treatment. He was finally, and cruelly, confined...more

[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-09-28 Summary: Good book w/ a few great ideas ... I work in a vet hospital and have trained many dogs. A lot of this book is basic dog training and should be in every home that has children. This book mostly recommends positive reinforcement but does recommend using a waterbottle and a few other ways of getting the dog's attention. However, some of the ideas towards the end were great at preparing our dogs for the upcoming baby. I just wish I'd gotten it sooner. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | This book is the product of years of working with expecting dog owners both to resolve child/dog issues as well as to prevent them. After speaking with one person more than I cared to that was forced into surrendering their beloved family companion because they hadn’t taken measures to prevent problems I decided to put everything relevant on the subject into writing in hopes that others would not have to undergo the same ordeal. The first section involves relationship building and the...more
Stacey and the Mystery at the Empty House (Baby-Sitters Club Mystery)
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-04-09 Summary: The empty house ... Stacey baby sits for the Bashers. She loves it. Then she notices something strange at the old house. [2] Rating: 4 Date: 2000-01-09 Summary: This book was pretty good. ... I'll have to say it was well thought out. Stacey has to "house-sit" while regular sitting clients of the BSC are away in Paris for awhile. Then she finds that the household appliances are warm and have been used; dishes washed, coffee pots warm....Hmm? What is going on? It could've been creepier and it could've been on a better reading level, but overall you will like it. As I mostly advise to anyone, please check it out at the library before you buy it so you know what you're getting. ...more

[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-03-01 Summary: First animal names for babies ... This series of books is wonderful. First, they show a photo with a word clue, then a photo of the baby animal with its mother, giving the names for both (i.e. cat-kitten, goldfish-fry, dog-puppy, guinea pig-pup, rabbit-bunny, parrot-baby). Research indicates that photos are better than unrealistic drawings for young children -- this is ideal for that reason. The board book itself is quite durable, and I hope it will withstand a lot of use, because it's already a favorite. ...more

[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-05-12 Summary: Interesting and Different ... Normally I hate seek and find type games, but there's something about this one that just does it for me. The graphics are adorable and the many different games differ enough to keep it interesting. Behind each door is a different room with different objects to find, some moving, some layered, some just plain weird.
